In a short space of time, Cleo fires off a series of anonymous tweets under the hashtag #kyliejennerfidead. to express her frustration about how white women appropriate and benefit from black culture and stereotypes in a hard-hitting and unequivocal way. In her witty, in-yer-face, fast-paced, darkly comical drama, Jasmine Lee-Jones picks up on current debates about Black identity, beauty ideals, cultural appropriation, racism, queerness, and wokism, unfolding across the analogue and digital worlds of young people. She frames a legitimate argument concerning the ownership of Black female bodies, both online and IRL, within the language of hate speech, provocatively and intelligently complexifying the debate over what can and cannot be said, and by whom.
