Businessman by day, composer by night: Charles Ives (1874-1954), an extremely affluent American composer in 1920s New York, was notorious for his compositions ranging from romantic songs to microtonality to avant-garde symphonies. The centerpiece of the concert is the collection of 114 Songs — a self-published anthology from 1922, encompassing Ives‘ entire creative period, from the drinking songs of the popular Yale student to romantic art songs to politically motivated, dissonant protest songs, bearing witness to an extraordinary life.
